How about this. When Han tells Finn and Rey, "I used to wonder about that myself. Thought it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo. A magical power holding together good and evil, the dark side and the light. Crazy thing is... it's true. The Force, the Jedi. All of it. It's all true." you pause Force Awakens and then go watch the movies starting with Phantom Menace. Then after Jedi, come back to Force Awakens and continue the ST.
I should write a play where some Dad tries to show his kids Star Wars and keeps stopping to say "Okay so you need to know this part now that you've seen that part" over and over again, breaking the whole thing down into cross references.
The show ends with Dad and the kids sitting in front of 2 TVs, 4 laptops/iPads, and several 3 ring binders of Wookieepedia printouts. Dad closes the binders, shuts down the devices, and says "OK, that covers the first 10 minutes. Let's keep watching."
I've seen more insane ideas. All of them were equally terrible and blasphemous as this but they were more insane.
In all seriousness, the problem I have is people should engage with art outside their comfort zones and the modern world already encourages people to not do that.
And, yeah. I can kind of get it. A kid who's never seen SW doesn't have all the priors that helped me hate these films. And it's SO NICE to know that even if MAGAs hate "woke," THE NEXT GENERATION IS STEPPING INTO A DIFFERENT WORLD!!!
Interesting idea... but no. I don't have children either, but I did take care of my niece (who's also my goddaughter) and she got into Star Wars through The Phantom Menace when she was only 3. It was the first live-action movie she loved. Her favorite character (at first) wasn't Padme; it was Jar Jar Binks. I bought her a doll of him and she carried it around with her everywhere. The only problem with starting a child with the prequels is how to deal with the tragic events of Revenge of the Sith.
