Thanks for joining me on this new Substack adventure. I hope we’ll all have patience with me as I figure out this format. Or, at least, we will learn patience.
Up to this point, I’ve separated my writing (where I’m primarily a playwright) from the Star Wars obsession that occupies so much of my ever-shrinking brainspace. Sometime over the last year or so, I realized that 1) writing about Star Wars on Facebook or Instagram is just making content for someone else’s profit and 2) I really like writing about, thinking about, and talking about Star Wars. So, as two men great men once said, this is where the fun begins!
I’ll be publishing a few times this first week just to get myself into the swing of things, and then, on May 27th, I’ll officially launch with my response to the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi. I’ll post at least weekly from then on.
I see this newsletter as a way to react to the latest news, like new series, but more than that, a place share thoughts on subjects that go further a-star-field… like the recurrence of adoption in Star Wars; or the curious case of Constable Zuvio; or how I felt on Smuggler’s Run at Galaxy’s Edge; or how little of the teaser trailer of Rogue One shows up in the finished film. Think of this as a way for me to get certain ideas out of my system, so no one has to be saved by a friend while talking to me at a party.
I also hope this will be a settlement on the outskirts where the focus is celebration and not cynicism, on analysis instead of critique. You won’t find me ranking the movies from worst to best, for example. It just doesn’t spark joy. We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn graffiti-style content-free complaining down.
One more thing! I assume that this isn’t necessary for most of my readers, but if you are neither Gen X, nor up on the names of planets that were not named expressly in the films, the title of this newsletter comes from here and here.
So! Lights down. Cheering audience. Old school 20th Century Fox fanfare. Here comes the Lucasfilm logo! Those famous blue words and…. blast into the main theme! Punch it!
The blog is back, baby!
