It’s still Ach-To-Ber! High ho, content! Away!
One of the contributions The Last Jedi made to the Star Wars galaxy was fashion. Star Wars is rife with iconic hairstyles and groovy get-ups, but in The Last Jedi, jewelry gets its due.
According to Rian Johnson, the idea came from Carrie Fisher herself. He said: “In rehearsals Carrie grabbed my arm and told me with great urgency that we needed ‘space jewelry.’ I thought that was a fabulous idea. So.”
Did you notice how abundant it is in Episode VIII?
Here are a few key examples of how much space jewelry Johnson brought to the screen.
The Caretakers
The wonderfully Henson-esque Island Natives are largely in plain dress. It seems like their equivalent of the convent’s Mother Superior gets to wear a smooth, vaguely lunar stone on a string to show her station.
General Leia Organa
Carrie Fisher’s final actual on screen performance is full of costumed gloriousness. Her rings, bracelets and earrings are regal in contrast to the utilitarian look she sports in The Force Awakens. Even the cloaked binary beacon is piece of wearable tech/jewelry.
Poe Dameron
If you’re paying close attention, you’ll see that Poe wears necklace with a ring on a chain in The Last Jedi. In one of the handy Visual Dictionaries that accompany major releases, Pablo Hidalgo writes: “Poe wears the wedding ring of his late mother, Shara Bey, on a necklace, waiting to share it someday with the right partner.” You can imagine how the word ‘partner’ stirred up those who were picking up on the vibes between Poe and Finn. (Poe’s very very straight-guy - or at least bi-guy - turn in The Rise of Skywalker disappointed some of those very-online folks.)
Luke Skywalker…
