The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and Dragonsnake in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Somewhere in space, specifically Los Angeles, The Mandalorian & Grogu premiered. We’re one week away from a new Star Wars movie being officially released in theaters. I’m so excited I could lightspeed skip.

There hasn’t been a new Star Wars movie since I started this Substack in 2022. I’ve been writing about animated series, streaming series, general stuff I like. I’m particularly compulsive and strange and obsessive when it comes to the release of a new Star Wars movie. So, you’re about to experience that in real-time. You’re welcome?

When I saw Episode I way back in 1999, I saw in 16 times in the theater. I think there were a few reasons for that, including having a difficult summer in my life, I think. But also, there had been exactly four Star Wars movies and this was one of them. How could it feel like one of my movies, those movies, if I just saw it one time? I think I was trying to give myself that feeling, maybe? To feel like it was going home again.

Of course, this isn’t 1999. In the intervening years, between Episode IX and now, there’s so much Star Wars. Now, between The Rise of Skywalker and this film, we’ve had three seasons of The Mandalorian, one of Boba Fett, several animated series, Andor Seasons 1 & 2, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Acolyte. Lots and lots of Star Wars. More than ever, really. So can The Mandalorian & Grogu recapture the big screen feeling? That scarcity/rarity feeling?
